GUMS School of Medicine was founded in 1984 as a result of the relentless pursuit of a number of adept and enthusiastic members of the university on the same campus of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Guilan, and commenced its educational activities with an enrollment of 37 medical students. Since then, along with the amalgamation of medical education and health services, and the formation of Iran’s Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education in 1986, this school continued its efforts to train medical students for 9 years on the campus of Nursing and Midwifery School. In 1995, this school was transferred to its present location on the main campus of Guilan University.

The school started to offer an Associate degree in 1988 in the fields of Laboratory Science and Radiology in addition to training medical students. In 1990, the school expanded its mission with the admission of students in medical specialties.

It is now working with 247 academic staff of whom 15 are full professors, 71 are associate professors, 148 are assistant professors and 13 are instructors.

In addition to 680 medical students, 217 assistant specialists in Internal Medicine, Gynecology, Anesthesiology, pediatrics, Neurology, Urology, Radiology, Cardiology, Psychiatry, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, General Surgery and Neurosurgery, and in the subspecialty of Endocrinology are providing services in several treatment and teaching centers.

The school also offers some M.Sc. graduate programs including Physiology, Anatomy, and Microbiology.

At present, a large number of students graduated from this school are providing a variety of excellent healthcare and efficient treatment services to the people in Guilan Province and throughout our country.
