Registration of food intake and fasting habits in patients with coronary heart disease in Guilan province Nutrition Heshmat Registry (NUTHER)
In recent years, several studies have emphasized the essential role of eating habits and lifestyle in the development of atherosclerosis. Bad food choices are one of the most important factors that undermine health and are, either directly or indirectly, responsible for almost 50% of all CVD deaths. According to statistics presented in the Global Burden of Disease Study, more than 9.1 million premature deaths from cardiovascular diseases worldwide—which is equivalent to 52% of all recorded deaths from cardiovascular diseases —are attributable to risk factors associated with diet.
Therefore, since nutrition is a controllable risk factor for atherosclerosis, the correct identification of the main nutritional risk factors and paying attention to the nutritional status of patients with cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis can improve the patient's health status and consequently, can promote patients' awareness. As a result, establishing an association with food consumption is very important to reduce the occurrence of atherosclerosis and thus reduce the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.
Although race and geographical region can have an effect on the eating habits of people, so far no comprehensive study has been conducted that examines the eating habits and patterns of patients with CAD in Guilan province. As a result, the Cardiovascular Diseases Research Center of Guilan University of Medical Sciences plans to conduct a comprehensive review and analysis of nutritional habits, food intake, and supplement intake of various groups of patients diagnosed with CAD who refer to Heshmat Hospital for angiography to record their status. The goal is to identify the role of nutritional factors as factors affecting the risk of chronic cardiovascular diseases in relation to the severity and extent of vascular involvement.
These studies will ultimately be effective in providing more appropriate nutritional counseling services to patients and improving the quality of life of people with cardiovascular risk factors.
